  7.     Aware of Winnie Mandela's erratic behavior in recent years,
  8. many South Africans were guessing that the once-divorced Nelson
  9. might give his wife the shove following his release from
  10. prison. Not so. With Winnie facing trial in February on
  11. kidnapping and assault charges, Nelson is now springing to her
  12. defense. The government has subjected her to a "great deal of
  13. persecution," he says, adding that the press found her guilty
  14. before she appears in court. "I was unable to give her
  15. protection when I was in prison," he explains. "[But] I am now
  16. here." Should the verdict go against Mandela's wife, it could
  17. further endanger the delicate negotiations he is conducting
  18. with Pretoria.
